Next week, Madelyn, Sara Jane, and I will attend our Diocesan Synod (the every-two-years meeting of the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster, of which we are a part). We are the delegates that will be representing this little corner of the Diocese here in Squamish alongside hundreds of other clergy, lay and youth delegates from different parishes and ministries from Hope to Powell River, Port Moody to White Rock, gathered to do the business of the Church.

That work is important – the business of motions, finances, budgets and reports. However, just as important is the work that we will be doing of meeting other delegates, our siblings in Christ from across the Diocese, and hearing and sharing stories, eating and praying together, and I hope, bringing the stories of what we have seen and heard back here to St. John’s.

Synod is a good reminder for all of us that we are part of something much bigger than just ourselves. We are part of a movement that stretches across time and space – followers of Jesus around the world and throughout the ages, doing our best to pray and live and work together in service of God’s Kingdom of justice, peace, mercy and love.

So, pray for us this week and for all the delegates to the Diocesan Synod, and give thanks to God for the sign this gathering represents of that larger catholic (meaning universal) Church that we belong to. Give thanks for and remember that we do not travel this way – the Way of Christ – alone.

Thanks be to God!
