Lent is 40 days long.
Wait… is it?
Ok, you got me. It is actually 46…kind of (you can go ahead and count the days if you like).
But why?
Good question – I am glad you asked.
It is because the Sundays in Lent are not counted in the 40 days.
Sundays that occur in the season of Lent are called the Sundays in Lent and not Sundays of Lent. While this might seem like pointless semantics, I think there is something important that this intentional distinction points to.
Though Lent is a time for fasting and repentance, every Sunday is a feast of the resurrection. Every. Single. One.
We need feasts in the midst of our fasting. We need joy and celebration interspersed in our lives, even when things are hard, when there is penitence and mourning to be done. So, celebrate today, however you can, right now, even for a moment. Let us remember the resurrection, the story of God’s love for the world.
Thanks be to God!
